Steelers ink Tomlin to extension
2010-07-23 14:34:00

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers extended the contract of head coach Mike Tomlin through at least 2012, the team announced on Friday. In addition, the deal calls for an option year for 2013.

"Mike Tomlin has proven to be one of the top head coaches in the National Football League in a relatively short time," said Steelers president Art Rooney II. "His unique ability to lead the team and motivate individuals have been key factors in our success over recent years."

The 38-year-old heads into his fourth year at the helm in the Steel City. He led Pittsburgh to a 9-7 record in 2009 but failed to reach the postseason. It was a disappointing follow-up to the club's 12-4 record in 2008 which included the franchise's sixth Super Bowl title in a narrow triumph over Arizona.

Since taking the reins from Bill Cowher in 2007, Tomlin has compiled a 31-17 record in the regular season and a 3-1 postseason mark.

"I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers," Tomlin said. "I am excited to have the opportunity to live and work in this great city, and to focus on the true matter at hand, which is winning football games and bringing another Super Bowl title to Pittsburgh."

Tomlin is the lone bench boss in franchise history to win division titles in his first two years as coach, and was the youngest head coach in league history to win a Super Bowl at age 36 when the Steelers topped the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.
